NSW Schools: CAS hold off fast finishing GPS side to claim bragging rights

CAS held off a fast finishing GPS side to claim a 24-19 victory and bragging rights over their rivals for a second straight year.

CAS dominated the first half and scored four unanswered tries to lead 24-0 at the break, before GPS played their way into the game and hit back with three tries of their own.

Trailing by five, GPS had a chance to steal victory after the full time siren and spread the ball across their backline to 15-year old Kings winger Joseph Suaalii, who looked certain to score until he was stopped by some desperate CAS defence.

Suaalii lost control of possession as he dived for the corner, as CAS held on for a memorable 24-19 victory.

GPS looked the slicker of the two sides in the opening exchanges, but made a number of uncharacteristic mistakes which handed possession and territory to CAS.

Barker winger Ben Bryden showed plenty of pace to open the scoring for CAS, after the visitors turned over possession on half way and spread the ball wide.

CAS No.8 Luca Moretti then charged through a gaping hole on the back of an attacking lineout to give his side a 12-0 lead.

GPS were their own worst enemy early on and repeatedly made mistakes as they tried to exit their half.

From an attacking scrum, Moretti capitalised again soon after and dragged in several defenders to create space for No.9 David Tejcek, who scored CAS’ third try in the corner.

The CAS forwards then executed a driving maul perfectly from 20 metres out and crashed over to give their side a comprehensive 24-point lead at the break.

GPS continued to make errors early in the second half and struggled to gain momentum. With 20 minutes remaining, they retained possession consistently for the first time in the match and suddenly looked like a different side.

Scots flanker Brett Wellington split the CAS defence then showed brilliant footwork to beat the fullback and score untouched next to the posts.

GPS then scored from a driving maul and after flyhalf Charlie Savala stepped and weaved his way to the tryline, the deficit was just five points heading into the final five minutes.

CAS looked to have sealed victory after causing a turnover and taking play down the other end of the field, but GPS refused to give in.

Suaalii was tackled without the ball as his side looked to counter attack from inside their own half. GPS played on from the ensuing penalty and came within metres of scoring several times.

But CAS’ scrambling defence was brilliant and proved the difference after the final whistle.

Earlier in the afternoon, GPS II were far too good for CAS II and scored seven tries in a comfortable 47-17 victory.

Playing behind a dominant forward pact, Kings flyhalf Matt Minogue and the GPS backline barely put a foot wrong, with Minogue even drop kicking his final conversion from the sideline with the final play of the game.

The NSW All Schools trials continue on Friday at NSW Rugby HQ at Daceyville with all six associations to play matches from 10:30am.
