NSW GPS Road Home: Joeys and Scots in box seat heading into final three rounds

Following a break over the July school holidays, GPS Rugby returns on Saturday to kick start an intriguing final three rounds of rugby.

While Joeys and Scots are in the box seat to claim the premiership, Riverview and Newington are both an upset win away from cracking the title race wide open.

Here’s a look at each side’s run towards the final Saturday of the season.

Joeys – 4pts (2 wins): Riverview (H), Kings (A), Scots (H)

Joeys started the season strongly with impressive wins over Shore and Newington but face arguably the toughest run of matches to finish the season. Saturday’s grudge match against Riverview could go either way, while Kings will also take some beating ahead of a final round showdown against Scots.

If they are to finish the season as undefeated premiers, they will have well and truly earned it.

Scots – 4 pts (2 wins): Kings (H), Newington (A), Joeys (A)

Like Joeys, Scots are also undefeated following a tight win over Riverview and a comfortable win over Shore. On form, they should beat Kings and Newington to earn a spot in a “grand final” against Joeys, but form doesn’t always stand up in schoolboy footy.

Saturday’s clash at home against Kings is vital.

Riverview – 2pts (1 win): Joeys (A), Shore (H), Newington (H)

Riverview fell just short against Scots in week one and will feel as though they let a victory get away from them. Despite that, they can break the competition wide open with a win over Joeys on Saturday.

If they do so, they’ll like their chances of winning their final two matches which could result in a joint premiership.

Newington – 2pts (1 win): Shore (A), Scots (H), Riverview (A)

Newington couldn’t match a red hot Joeys outfit in round one, but like Riverview they can turn the season on its head with an upset win over Scots in round five.

If they can win their next two matches, Newington’s final round class against Iggies could have serious premiership implications.

Kings – 0 pts (0 wins): Scots (A), Joeys (H), Shore (A)

Kings are yet to get their best side on the park in 2019 and while it’s difficult to see them playing their way back into title contention, no one would be surprised to see them cause an upset or two over the next three weeks.

They may not win the competition this year, but they might stop others from doing so.

Shore – 0 pts (0 win): Newington (H), Riverview (A), Kings (H)

Shore couldn’t have had a more difficult start to the season, following back to back clashes against Joeys and Scots. While they struggled against the competition heavyweights, Shore know how to cause an upset and pose a serious threat to Newington and Riverview side’s looking to keep their seasons alive in the coming fortnight.
