NSW GPS: Joeys continue on wining way, Riverview and King’s get victories
By MARK CASHMAN
St Joseph’s College confirmed their credentials as the team to beat for the NSW GPS title as they raced to 78-7 win over Shore at Northbridge on Saturday.
Joey’s scored 11 tries in what was a complete performance against a side that had been come into the game with genuine hopes that they would keep pace with the defending premiers.
But like in their first round win over The Scots College Joeys hit the ground running and put the result beyond the home team in the first 20 minutes of the first half.
Shore coach Hadley Jackson, who coached the Randwick first grade last year, said his side had come up against a really good team.
“We’ve only really come together on the start of our journey to improve and compete, but Joeys were just a bigger, faster and more skilful side,” Jackson said.
“I must say that they are the best side that we have played against so far but perhaps King’s may be able to put some pressure on them in different areas.
“Our boys have been tremendous though and are working away at getting better which has the full support of the school.”
Elsewhere St Ignatius College got their season underway with a 53-23 win over Newington at Stanmore dictating the pace of the game in what was a promising display.
“Riverview were exceptional right across the park and in the end they just had too much pace and we couldn’t cope with it,” Newington Director of Rugby, Lachlan Fear, said.
“They are good at keeping the tempo of a game high and they kept the ball from us for much of the first 15 minutes of the game.
“It meant a lot of defence from our boys and while the outcome wasn’t what we wanted that will be useful for the next few games.
“We’re not walking away from our performance but now it’s important that we hit back as quickly as we can.
“There is still plenty left in this season for us. The ladder can change quite quickly.”
The King’s School were the other winners from the second round with their 31-21 win over The Scots College at North Parramatta.
