NSW GPS: Defence the key for King’s in big ‘final’ against Joeys

By MARK CASHMAN

Like any important game at any level, the NSW GPS “final” between St Joseph’s College and The King’s School will go to the team that first of all aims up in defence.

That’s the opinion of King’s forwards coach Hugh Perrett as the countdown continues to the big game on Wednesday afternoon at Hunters Hill.

“Defensively we’ve got to make sure that we play with our heads up,” Perrett stressed.

“Playing a team like Joeys who like to run it from everywhere we’ve got to make sure that we get our spacing right and stay connected in defence for 80 minutes.

“It’s going to be an interesting afternoon that’s for sure. They are a very well drilled team and their fullback is very dangerous.

“I think the game against St Ignatius gave them a bit of a scare and they have been very focussed since.”

King’s have had a light couple of training days in the lead in to Wednesday.

“Yeah it has been a very unusual season with everything that has been going on, it’s been a bit bizarre actually,” Perrett said.

“But it is great that the boys can play some footy and have a crack at winning a title. We are all looking forward to the game.”

King’s didn’t play their best footy on the weekend but set up the “final” with a 50-19 win over Shore.

“We got off to a good start and had the game in hand early but Shore kept coming and retained possession for long periods of time,” he added.

“In the end they scored 19 points which says something about the progress that they have made through the season.”

This game was scheduled to be played at the front end of the season, but Covid-19 meant that the  first round of the competition would have to be played the Wednesday after the second to final round.

Wednesday’s final round:

St Joseph’s College v The King’s School at Hunters Hill, Shore v St Ignatius College at Northbridge, The Scots College v Newington at Scots.

How they stand:

St Joseph’s 8 (W4 L0 +144)

Kings 8 (W4 L0 +95)

Scots 6 (W3 L2 +13)

St Ignatius 2 (W1 L3 -14)

Newington 2 (W1 L3 -88)

Shore 0 (W0 L4 -150)
