NSW CAS Road Home: Barker lead but CAS title race remains wide open
The 2019 CAS season was always expected to be tight, but few would have predicted things to end up the way they have at the unofficial halfway point of the season.
Barker remain undefeated but upset victories by Aloys and Cranbrook in round two mean all six sides have a realistic shot at winning the 2019 title.
It’s going to be a seriously entertaining three weeks of CAS rugby.
Barker – 6pts (2 wins): St Aloysius’ (A), Waverley (H), Knox (A)
Barker haven’t put a foot wrong yet in 2019 but still have a lot of work ahead of them to claim back to back CAS titles.
An away trip to play a confident Aloys’ side this weekend will be tough, ahead of bumper clashes against Waverley and Knox to finish the season.
St Aloysius’ – 3pts (1 win): Barker (H), Knox (A), Cranbrook (H)
Aloys’ shocked everyone when they ambushed Waverley in round two and if they can replicate that performance against Barker and Knox in the coming weeks, they’re a serious shot at winning the flag.
While that might be easier said than done, it’s far too soon to write off the blue and gold.
Knox – 3pts (1 win): Trinity (A), St Aloysius’ (H), Barker (H)
Knox fell short against a gutsy Cranbrook side in a Friday night match at Woollahra Oval in round two but will return to normality this weekend when they travel to Trinity.
If they perform well and beat Trinity and Aloys, they’ll set up a bumper final round clash against Barker.
Trinity – 3pts (1 win): Knox (H), Cranbrook (A), Waverley (H)
Trinity couldn’t match Barker before the holidays but can get their season right back on track with an upset win over Knox this weekend.
If they can do that, they’ll take plenty of confidence into their final two matches against Cranbrook and Waverley.
Cranbrook – 3pts (1 win): Waverley (A), Trinity (H), St Aloysius’ (A)
Cranbrook out-enthused a highly fancied Knox outfit to break the competition wide open before the break and will like their chances against Waverley this weekend.
If they can beat their neighbours in Saturday’s grudge match, they’re a pretty good chance of claiming this first title since 2014.
Waverley – 0pts (0 wins): Cranbrook (H), Barker (A), Trinity (H)
Nobody predicted Waverley to be winless at this point of the year after starting the season as one of the competition favourites.
In saying that, their year is far from over and three wins in their final three matches could push them back into premiership calculations.
