Marlins coach proposes a bit of ‘madness’ to finish Shute Shield season
By MARK CASHMAN
Manly Marlins coach Matt McGoldrick has proposed a radical Shute Shield finals series that will involve all 13 clubs to finish off the 2021 season.
The ‘Goldy’ standard model would run over four weeks and would be dependant on the final three rounds of the competition being played.
Those last three weekends of games are proposed to be Round 11, 12 and 13 which would mean that each club would have played every other club once.
The teams that finish first, second and third would then have the first weekend of finals off.
From there GAME ONE of the qualifying series would be played between the team that finished fourth and the team that finished 13th.
GAME TWO between team five and team 12, GAME THREE between team six and team 11, GAME FOUR between team seven and team 10 and GAME FIVE between team eight and team nine.
The winners of each qualifying final would stay alive and head into Week Two of the finals.
In the first game of the second week teams one two and three would come into play after watching on ion week one.
Team one would play the winner from Game Five, team two would play the winner of Game Four, team three would take on the winner of Game Three.
Then the winners from Game One and Game would play off.
From there the winner of 1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 make their way into the business end of the playoffs with the winner of 1 v 8 taking on the winner of 4 v 5.
In the other game the winner of 2 v 7 would play the winner of 3 v 6.
Those game would supply the grand finalists.
“It would be a good month of footy and anyone could win it,” McGoldrick told Rugby News.
“Play them at night, double headers and all that sort of stuff and it would keep the interest in playing footy for teams like the Two Blues and Penrith to come back after the break.
“The best teams would still have a definite advantage from their early season wins and it’s something that’s worth a bit of a go.”
There have been numerous model bandied about to finish off the Shute Shield season with the original six team series, an eight team model and also a 10-team model.
