Knox strike late to beat Cranbrook, Barker and Waverley record opening round wins
Knox scored three unanswered tries in the final 20 minutes of their opening round CAS clash to beat Cranbrook 31-10 at Wahroonga.
Wearing predominately black jersey’s to celebrate the school’s centenary, Knox opened the scoring with a try from a driving maul in the 7th minute, scored by hooker Marcus Aitchison.
Cranbrook dominated possession and territory for the next 20 minutes though and eventually crossed through backrower Seb Latham.
The visitors then defended their goal line in the final minutes of the first half and held Knox out to trail by just two points at the break.
Knox extended their lead two minutes in to the second half when fullback Reilly Caswell picked up a loose ball and found space out wide.
Caswell offloaded to Heath Turner who was tackled just short of the line, but backrower Tom Haslem burrowed his way over on the next phase.
Cranbrook turned to an old Wallabies play to score their second five pointer. Attacking close to Knox’s line, No.9 Tom Marchant threw a lovely inside ball to No.8 Cam McKenzie à la Gregan and Finegan back in the day.
But Knox took control of the match in the final 20 minutes. Leading 14-10, the home side scored through winger Henry Colvin from a well worked backline play in the 45th minute.
Seven minutes later, centre Max Roach found space out wide and showed good speed to score in the corner.
Flyhalf Tye Jecks then skipped past two defenders to set up a fifth try for Knox scored by centre Gabe Gordon in the 71st minute.
Knox host Trinity next weekend, while Cranbrook return to the Eastern Suburbs to face neighbours Waverley.
In the rounds other matches, Aloys showed plenty of fight but were eventually beaten 39-21 by Waverley and Barker beat Trinity 47-12.
