Kings beat Joeys at Hunters Hill, Newington and Riverview secure top spots with impressive wins

A dominant Kings’ forward pack led their school to an impressive 24-19 victory over Joeys at Hunters Hill in round three of the 10-round GPS first XV competition.

Joeys scored two exceptional tries from inside their own half through wingers Kynan Hart and Henry Troy and played with the typical flare of the Cerise and Blue but as they did last week against Newington, struggled to match their opposition up front.

Trailing 7-3, Hasani Bloomfield barged over from close range for Kings midway through the first half to give the visitors a 10-7 half time lead.

Kings then pushed further ahead with a try to No.8 Issac Fonua from a tap move. The visitors misfired with a similar play late in the first half but executed perfectly seven minutes into the second half and led 17-7.

Joeys winger Troy kept his side in the game with a brilliant individual five pointer but an overthrow at line out time deep in the home side’s territory handed Kings another try and a fairly comfortable 24-14 lead.

Joeys lock Cameron Stuckey crashed over in the 70th minute giving the home side one final chance to steal an unlikely victory.

But Kings’ defence held strong, helping Hugh Perrett’s side move to equal second on the GPS ladder.

In the rounds other matches, Newington continued their outstanding start to the season, beating Shore 47-5, while Riverview were too good for Scots 27-12.

All six teams face a short turnaround and will play on Thursday afternoon ahead of the June long weekend.

Newington host Kings in a clash of two of the competition’s in-form teams, while Joeys travel to Scots and Shore host Riverview.
