Junior Wallabies v Fiji: Standout Performers

The Junior Wallabies bounced back from a disappointing performance against Argentina to beat Fiji 58-5 on a wet evening on the Sunshine Coast.

While Sunday’s clash against New Zealand will be the true test, here’s our pick of the best performers in Tuesday’s win.

Paddy Tagg – Prop (NSW Waratahs, Sydney University)

The Junior Wallabies’ loosehead prop tightened up his side’s set piece and got the better of his opposing prop, earning a number of penalties at scrum time. He also hit like a steam train around the park.

Zac Hough – No.7 (Melbourne Rebels, Wests)

The former BBC flanker has put on more size since heading south to join the Rebels and was dominate, despite being one of the younger players on the field against Fiji. Looks to have all the talent of a young Fraser McReight and a big future ahead of him.

Jack Bowen – Flyhalf (NSW Waratahs, Eastern Suburbs)

While he didn’t have his best afternoon with the kicking tee, Bowen, still just 18, showed his class in wet conditions. The flyhalf controlled territory and the tempo of the match, allowing his side to attack well despite the wet conditions. Bowen arguably deserves the start or at least plenty of game time against New Zealand on Sunday.

Mac Grealy – Fullback (Queensland Reds, University of Queensland)

It’s easy to forget that Mac Grealy is still only 20 when he’s impressing at Premier Rugby or Super Rugby level. Back against players his own age, the fullback showed his class and made an impact with just about every touch. It’ll be interesting to see what sort of impact he has against the Kiwis this weekend.

Ben Dowling – Wing (Aussie 7s, Randwick)

The Aussie 7s gun showed he’s just as good a finisher in the XV-man format with two tries against Fiji. Blistering pace and a good footy brain should see Dowling continue scoring plenty of five pointers wherever he is playing.

Mitch Watts – No.8 (NSW Waratahs, Randwick)

A big, strong No.8, originally from Tamworth. Watts matched the physicality of the big Fijians and led the Junior Wallabies pack around the park.
