Jeeps forced to work for points against improving Norths’ side
GPS have maintained their unbeaten start to 2021 with a 22-14 victory over Norths at Hugh Courtney Oval.
The Gallopers opened the scoring via Maaloga Konelio, who found the line out wide courtesy of a Teti Tela long ball.
Norths quickly hit back with a try of their own to prop Paulo Leleisiuao, as the sides headed to the sheds locked at 7-all as momentum swung either way at Shaw Road.
Michael Richards had the first points of the second half with an intercept try, but Norths again responded, this time through Lachlan Howell who scored to put the Eagles into a two-point lead with 18-minutes to play.
It wasn’t to be for the Eagles however, with an AJ Alatimu try and Jason Hofmeyr try in the final 15-mintues sinking the hosts and souring Heritage Day celebrations at the Nest.
Veteran prop Fred Burke put in another strong performance for the Gallopers, with his industrious work across the park and in the scrum helping propel the side to victory.
Norths head coach Pat Byron said his side is still searching for precision in attack as they look for their first win of the season.
“I thought we competed for the full 80 mins which was great, and something which we didn’t do against Bond the previous week,” Byron said.
“I thought we generally defended well, but conceded one super soft try which was disappointing.
“We still need to work on converting our chances. We turned over too much ball in their 22, and didn’t finish off some good line breaks
“GPS’ scrum was very good, and probably the difference between the two sides. They also took their chances, something we need to learn to do”
Jeeps host Easts this weekend, with Norths travelling to St Lucia to face UQ.
