Former Sydney Uni and Warringah winger James Dargaville is relishing his opportunity to start in the Brumbies backline in the run towards the Super Rugby finals.

With Henry Speight on Sevens duties and Joe Tomane still returning from injury, the 24-year old has received plenty of game time in recent weeks and hasn’t looked out of place.

“The last four rounds has been really exciting for Nigel (Ah Wong) and myself getting a decent opportunity with some game time,” Dargaville told Brumbies media.

“I think it’s more of a week to week process especially with Joe (Tomane) on his way back you’ve just got to perform well and if Bernie (Larkham) feels that you’re the right fit for the team at that time of the year then so be it.

“We’ve just got to keep performing well and whoever gets the spot at the end of the season I’m sure will do a good job.”

The Brumbies lead the Australian conference with two rounds remaining, but face the Auckland Blues at Eden Park tonight in a match that could define their season.

The Brumbies have lost four of their last eight matches at the venue.

“You can’t really take too much into it because we’re both two very different teams to when we have dropped those games against the Blues and those other teams at Eden Park.”

“You’ve just got to take it one game at a time as they say and just look forward to another good contest over at Eden Park.

“As we’ve seen with the Wallabies, sometimes having too much possession can be a bad thing so if we can really choke them out, defend well, and lift our defence from last week I think we’ll go on to winning the game.”

If the Brumbies win their final two matches, they’ll likely finish top of the Australian conference and earn a home semi final in the opening week of the playoffs and Dargaville says if that happens, there is no reason why the Brumbies can’t give the competition a real shake.

“At this time of the year you’re always looking to come into the finals with a bit of form,” Dargaville said.

“As you saw in that second half of the last game we really started to find our shape and score some good tries so if we can just lead on from that and keep building into the finals we’ll be good.”

A former flanker, Dargaville has featured as a winger in his last five appearances with the Brumbies, though he says he doesn’t mind what position he plays.

“As long as I’m on the field, I’m happy.”
