Shute Shield: Round 11 Wrap Up
Manly set up a top of the table clash, Warringah get out of gaol in the final minute and Easts confirm that they’re the real deal this season.
Catch up on all the action from another entertaining round of Shute Shield rugby.
Manly 45-34 West Harbour
A double to Marlins No.8 Harry Bergelin proved the difference in Manly’s 11-point victory over West Harbour at Concord Oval.
Boosted by the inclusion of Waratahs winger Taqele Naiyaravoro, the Pirates started strongly and led 14-10 midway through the first half.
But looking to secure their spot in the top three, Manly responded with back to back tries to Robbie Coleman and Bergelin to take a 27-17 lead to the break.
The two sides traded blows early in the second half, before Bergelin finished off a well worked team try to give the visitors a commanding lead.
Denis Pili-Gaitau then crossed for Manly’s sixth try to put the result beyond doubt.
They host Sydney Uni in a bumper clash next weekend, while West Harbour will try to play their way back in to the top six when they host Easts.
Southern Districts 66-21 Parramatta
Southern Districts came flying out of the gates and scored 33 unanswered points in the first half hour of their clash against Parramatta on Back to Port Hacking Day at Forshaw.
Centre Will Thomas claimed an early double and helped the Rebels take a 47-7 lead to the half time break.
Waratahs forward Jed Holloway scored early in the second half to put the home side further ahead, before Parramatta crossed for two late consolation tries in the 66-21 loss.
Souths fullback Christian Kagiassis finished the afternoon with 24 points to overtake Sydney Uni centre James Kane as the competition’s leading point scorer.
The Rebels remain in eighth but will edge closer to the top six after a bye next weekend. Parramatta host Warringah at Lidcombe.
Eastern Suburbs 36-27 Eastwood
Eastern Suburbs took another step towards ending the club’s Shute Shield finals drought with an impressive 36-27 win over Eastwood.
The Beasties welcomed back five players from Waratahs duties, but were forced to play a quarter of the match with 14 men after receiving yellow cards in both halves.
Easts led 22-15 before centres Ned Yeomans and James Field both crossed to give the home side a 36-15 lead.
Eastwood rallied late and scored twice, but it was little but consolation as Easts leapfrogged West Harbour into sixth spot.
The Beasties take on West Harbour in round 12, while Eastwood face Norths.
Warringah 27-26 Gordon
Gordon fell just short of causing the upset of the season against an understrength Warringah outfit at Rat Park.
With 10 first graders on the sideline, the defending premiers woes worsened in the eighth minute when fullback Hamish Angus left the field with a concussion.
But a new look Gordon side seized the opportunity and playing off the back of a solid scrum and line out, took the match to Warringah.
After trailing 19-8, the Highlanders hit back with tries to winger Sam Farnham and flanker Jack McGuire.
Flyhalf Sam Leeming then kicked his third penalty goal to give Gordon’s travelling fans hope of an unlikely upset, but a last minute penalty goal from Miles Dorrian ended any hope of that.
Warringah travel to Lidcombe to play Parramatta next week, while Gordon will look to return to the winner’s circle when they host Randwick.
Sydney Uni 28-10 Randwick
Sydney Uni have ended a two match losing streak with a hard fought 28-10 victory over Randwick to stay four points clear of Norths and Manly at the top of the Shute Shield ladder.
The Students claimed a four try bonus point for the 10th time in 11 matches this year, while centre James Kane had a perfect afternoon with the boot in the 18 point victory.
Randwick stayed with Sydney Uni in the opening exchanges, and trailed by just four points before they leaked a late try to hand Uni a 21-10 half time lead.
Neither side bothered the scorekeeper for the majority of the second half until Kane scored off the back of a dominant Sydney Uni scrum to put the result beyond doubt.
The Students head to Manly Oval next week for a blockbuster clash against the Marlins, while Randwick take on Gordon in a match they must win to keep their slim finals hopes alive.
