Intrust Super Shute Shield: Coaches predict 2017 finalists & finals MVP

Ahead of tomorrow’s final regular season round, we asked the competition’s top six coaches who they thought their side would play in the 2017 Shute Shield grand final and which opposition player will have the biggest impact on the finals series:

Billy Melrose – Manly

“Call it sitting on the fence, but no one can work out where everyone is going to finish after this weekend so it’s a little to soon to be thinking about the grand final. I think it’s safe to say that there are a lot of contenders,” Melrose said.

“Jed Holloway is a terrific player when he’s in form at Souths. In saying that, every team remaining has key players that can hurt you.

Shannon Fraser – Randwick

“Manly are the team to beat at the moment,” Fraser said.

“Josh Holmes has a massive impact on the way Warringah play, he’s extremely dangerous.”

Matt Barr – Southern Districts

“It is going to be a great final series. Each of the top six sides have earned the opportunity and will be a threat. Manly, however, have been the most dominant and consistent side. They also have the advantage of being guaranteed to play in a grand final qualifier which puts them in the box seat for a spot in the GF,” Barr said.
“Will Miller was inspirational for Norths during last year’s series and will be looking to repeat the performance and give Norths another crack at a premiership.”
Darren Coleman – Warringah
“I’d have to say Southern Districts at the moment,” Coleman said
“If he’s fit, then probably Jed Holloway. He has an immense impact at club footy. Last week in his first game back he scored two and set up one of their four tries all in 45 minutes. He went off and they didn’t score again.
Simon Cron – Northern Suburbs

“I’ve honestly got no idea, it could go a number of ways but for us it’s about this weekend and then looking forward,” Cron said.

“Matt Lucas is outstanding at Manly. He has awesome kicking accuracy and tackle technique. He shuts a lot of line breaks down and is a big game player.”

Stu Woodhouse – Eastwood

We’re a long way from the GF, however Souths seem to be the in form team at present,” Woodhouse said.

“Dewet Roos will have a big impact for Souths. He is always scheming and looking for opportunities to put his team on the front foot.”
