Shute Shield: 2018 Top 10 Pointscorers
As the 2018 season gets tighter, points are becoming more and more valuable as we push towards September 1.
Here are the competition’s top 10 point scorers after 11 rounds this year:
1) Christian Kagiassis (Southern Districts) – 123 points
A 24-point haul from fullback Christian Kagiassis on Saturday saw the Souths recruit leapfrog James Kane into top spot. Perhaps his most important points of the season came a fortnight ago, when Kagiassis kicked a long range penalty goal after the full time siren to get the Rebels out of gaol against Randwick.
2) James Kane (Sydney Uni) – 121 points
In his first year in the top grade, Sydney Uni centre James Kane has been brilliant and has spent the majority of the season as the leading pointscorer. Interestingly, Kane’s 121 points this year only includes one penalty goal, which says plenty about the Students’ attacking mentality.
3) Sam Malcolm (West Harbour) – 107 points
After crossing the ditch to replace another Kiwi flyhalf, Sam Malcolm didn’t take long to find his feet at Concord and has continued to get better throughout the season. Malcolm’s accuracy will be vital if West Harbour are to play finals footy this year.
4) Nicholas Holton (Manly) – 104 points
South African born Marlin Nick Holton has spent time at both flyhalf and centre this year but has scored points regardless of the number on the back of his jersey. After taking the kicking reigns off Sam Lane, Holton’s big boot has helped Manly return to the top end of the Shute Shield ladder.
5) Angus Sinclair (Northern Suburbs) – 91 points
There has been plenty of change on and off the field at North Sydney Oval this year and flyhalf Angus Sinclair has been the steadying influence in between it all. Norths will be without a handful of their big names until closer to the finals, but if Sinclair can keep the scoreboard ticking over, the full strength Shoreman will be hard to stop.
6) Myles Dorrian (Warringah) – 87 points
After returning to Australia last year, 35-year old former London Irish playmaker Myles Dorrian played a crucial role in the Rats 2017 premiership and has been equally valuable again this year. Dorrian’s accuracy and calmness under pressure will be key if the Rats are to go close again this season.
7) Mick Snowden (Eastwood) – 77 points
After returning to Sydney after a few seasons with the Melbourne Rebels, Mick Snowden has helped turn the Woodies into genuine premiership contenders. While the No.9 is accurate with the boot, he’s also lethal around the park and has scored seven tries already in 2018.
8) Mack Mason (Eastern Suburbs) – 74 points
Despite missing several games this year, Easts playmaker Mack Mason has still kicked his way into the top 10.
9) Marcus Carbone & Luke Smart (Southern Districts) – 45 points
Souths No.8 Marcus Carbone and winger Luke Smart are the competition’s leading try scorers after 11 rounds, with nine five pointers each. While the Rebels certainly aren’t where they would like to be at this point of the season, these two have had no trouble finding their way to the tryline.
