Hospital Cup: Top 10 recruits of 2025 season so far

With the Hospital Cup season firmly underway, Rugby News is analysing the 10 best recruits across the competition so far. In no particular order, here is our list.

Henry Smith – Brothers

Smith is a no-frills centre who makes very few errors and appears to have a really well-rounded game.

He’s played every minute of every game so far this year, for an undefeated Brothers outfit. Coach Ben McCormack has spoken glowingly of the player.

Taqele Naiyaravoro – Norths

Former Waratahs winger Naiyaravoro has brought world class experience and explosive power to Norths. His dominant ball-carrying, line-breaking ability and try-scoring impact have been a major reason for the side’s strong start to 2025.

Quentin Raravula – GPS

Hooker Raravula has been a regular fixture on the try list for GPS, and is already a contender to finish as the competition’s leading try scorer. Coach Sio Kite said Raravula has integrated into the GPS group quickly, after joining the team only a few weeks before the season started.

Reece Tapine – UQ

Former Brumbies and Western Force back Reece Tapine has been an excellent pick up for Elton Berrange’s UQ side. Berrange believes Tapine’s experience in the game has brought an air of professionalism to his club.

Peter Halapio – Souths

Halapio has been a great recruit for Souths this season. The explosive front rower has played big minutes, maintaining a high performance throughout. Souths assistant Garrick Morgan said he’s also been a big addition off the pitch. A minor injury means he is out for two weeks, with the club eagerly awaiting his return.

Jethro Felemi – Easts

Tongan international Felemi has been dominating as a loosehead prop for Simon Craig’s unbeaten Easts team. Clearly a big reason for Easts’ successful start, the club will be hoping the one-time Reds player keeps up his excellent form.

Kitione Taliga – Souths

Fijian Sevens Gold Medal Olympian and Fiji Dura player Taliga has brought a new attacking dimension to Souths’ backline, either as fullback or 13. His competitive nature and experience at Souths has helped the club to a strong start.

Denzel Samoa – Wests

In what has been tough start to the season for Wests, former rugby league prodigy Samoa has been a shining light for the side. Coach Elwee Prinsloo has praised the slippery winger multiple times this year.

Maika Tuitubou – Norths

Outside centre Tuitubou has been a revelation in Norths’ backline this season. His footwork, speed and defensive reliability have been impressive. Norths director of football Michael Bell said his work ethic and humility have made him an instant favourite among Norths’ fans.

George Clarke – GPS

Winger Clarke, a former Sydney University player, has had a really consistent start to his life at GPS, with a series of solid games.

Honourable mentions: Kobe Walters (Bond), Deon Evans-Ao (Bond), David Fusitu’a (Brothers), Nuku Swerling (Easts), Nalani May (UQ), Leopino Maupese (Wests)
