Hospital Cup: Jeeps muscle up at scrum time to defeat Souths

By TOM PRIMMER

GPS outmuscled and outclassed Souths in Round 1, proving too much for the young Magpies to run out 29-11 winners on Saturday afternoon.

The Gallopers scored four tries to the Magpies’ one, with an impressive performance in both attack and defence seeing the side stamp themselves as competition heavyweights once again this season.

Livewire winger Josh Collins was at his electric best, scoring two long range tries with sheer pace to earn man of the match honours for the home side.

The GPS scrum was again a focal point, with Jethro Felemi, new recruit Matt Mafi and veteran Fred Burke putting their side on the front foot with some dominant efforts at set-piece time all afternoon.

Reds second rower Tuaina Taii Tualima also starred, his recent professional experience paying dividends through his leadership and work around the park.

The loss is another lesson for the Magpies, who often showed glimpses of their undeniable potential at Yoku Road.

Souths face another challenge this weekend when they host UQ, while Jeeps will travel to Shaw Road to take on Norths.
