Henry Speight joins Aussie 7’s for Olympics
Wallabies winger Henry Speight has agreed to a new three-year deal with the ARU and the Brumbies that will see the Fijian born flyer join the Australian Sevens Program in 2016, ahead of the Rio Olympics.
Sleight will split his time between Sevens and Super Rugby next season but will be available to play in the Sydney, Hong Kong and London legs of the 2015/16 World Rugby Sevens series, as well as the Olympics – should Australia qualify.
Following the Olympics, Speight will join the Wallabies for the remainder of the Rugby Championships, before linking with the Brumbies for the 2017 and 2018 Super Rugby season.
“I am grateful to both the ARU and the Brumbies for giving me the opportunity to continue playing for the Wallabies as well as having a chance to go to an Olympic Games. We still have to qualify for Rio, but I’m confident that we’ll get through and can push for a medal,” Speight said.
“Sevens is massive in Fiji where I grew up and I’ve always enjoyed playing it. It is an exciting time for the game in this country and I can’t wait to be a part of it.
“For now, my focus is on the Wallabies and making the squad for the World Cup.”
The 27-year-old will be joined by fellow Wallaby Quade Cooper in the Australian Sevens program next season, ahead of the sports debut at the Olympics.
“Henry brings with him an x-factor in attack, an ability to beat people and make line-breaks. He knows where the try-line is and has a solid defensive game. His knowledge of playing Sevens from when he was in Fiji will also be a valuable asset for us,” Australian Sevens coach Geraint John said.
