GPS Round 5: Standout Performers
Joeys fought back to beat Riverview, Newington held on to beat Kings and Shore claimed an important victory over Scots.
Here are a few players that caught our eye in round five.
Jonte Fowler – Joeys No.10
For a little guy, Joeys flyhalf Jonte Fowler has a seriously big boot. Yes, he played with the wind behind him in the second half against Riverview, but the 17-year old from Narrabri’s kicking game was the difference between the two sides in the minutes that mattered most.
Heamasi Makasini – Newington No.11
One of Australia’s most highly regarded junior footballers across both codes, Newington winger Heamasi Makasini had been fairly quiet in his side’s opening few games. But the big outside back was destructive almost every time he touched the ball against Kings and looked like a man playing against boys at times.
Callum Grantham – Newington No.14
On the other side of the park, Callum Grantham continued his impressive season with 19 individual points against Kings. Grantham is the form goal kicker of the competition and regularly slots conversions from all parts of the field. But he also showed his pace and finishing skills on Saturday.
Marshall Le Maitre – Shore No.7
There’s plenty of competition for the GPS No.7 jersey this year but Shore flanker Marshall Le Maitre reminded everyone that he is the incumbent with a brilliant performance in his side’s important win against Scots.
Tom Hartman – Riverview No.13
Iggies outside centre Tom Hartman took every opportunity he got in a tight match against Joeys on Saturday and swung momentum in his side’s favour with a brilliant, albeit opportunistic try, scored after Joeys allowed a ball to bounce from a clearing kick.
Jai Callaghan – Shore No.15
Shore fullback Jai Callaghan used fast feet to beat his defender and set up Shore match winning try for winger Hugh Breakwell. In a tight match, one moment of brilliance proved the difference.
