GPS Round 2: Standout Performers
Riverview and Joeys are both undefeated after the opening fortnight of the 2024 GPS first XV season, while Shore moved to third on the ladder after holding on to claim a tight win over Kings.
Here are a few standout performers from round two.
Lucas Arnautovic – Joeys No.6
Tall, strong and lightning quick, Joeys flanker Lucas Arnautovic had a blinder against Scots, scoring a try and setting up another.
The athletic backrower, who is also a handy basketball player, attacked in wide channels on both sides of the field and looked dangerous every time he got near the ball. He looks like a future Aussie 7s forward in the making.
Brody Folkes – Riverview No.14
Despite giving up at least a 15-20kg size advantage to Newington winger Heamasi Makasini, a player being chased by RA and half the NRL, Iggies outside back Brody Folkes arguably got the better of his one-on-one match up.
Folkes chased down Makasini and made a fantastic cover tackle to stop a Newington try in the first half, then showed great footwork to turn Makasini inside out and score an important try for the home side.
Henry Conick – Shore No.12
Classy Shore No.12 Henry Conick ran a great line to score late in the first half against Kings, converted four from four and added a penalty goal to finish the afternoon with 16 of Shore’s 31 points.
Conick is back for a second season of first XV and started alongside teammate Marshall Le Maitre in the NSW U18s side that beat QLD twice earlier this year.
Louis Fenwicke – Kings No.12
Conick’s direct opponent Louie Fenwicke was equally as impressive in a losing side. The big, powerful centre scored two tries and looked too big and too strong each time he carried.
Fenwicke’s centre partner Isamu Naito also caused headaches for the Shore defence.
Kynan Hart – Joeys No.14
Joeys outside back Kynan Hart made an impact every time he popped up in his side’s electric backline. Hart ran a sweep play off a midfield line out to give Joeys an overlap midway late in the first half, then backed up nicely on the inside to score the home side’s second try.
He then threw a fantastic one-handed offload while running at full pace a few minutes later to set up another try and give Joeys a handy half time advantage.
