GPS: Newington beat Joeys to top first XV ladder as Scots and Iggies bounce back

Newington held out Joeys in a shoot-out at Hunters Hill to claim the school’s second straight first XV victory and take top spot on the GPS ladder after the opening fortnight.

Elsewhere, Scots kicked a penalty goal on full time to beat Shore and Riverview bounced back to beat Kings

At Hunter’s Hill, a dominant set piece set a platform for Newington who outscored Joeys three tries to two to lead 19-15 at half time.

Joeys retook the lead with a brilliant tap move just minutes into the second half before the visitors took control of the match with consecutive five pointers.

Trailing 33-20 with 20 minutes remaining, lock Mackinley Dooley crashed over to get Joeys back into the contest before fullback Julian Minto scored what could be an early contender for try of the season to reduce the deficit to just one point.

From a midfield scrum, Minto leaped over an attacker to claim a Newington crossfield kick at full pace and raced down the eastern touchline. He then bumped off two defenders and scored in the corner to claim a spectacular individual try.

Luck alluded Minto in the closing minutes of the match though. A clever Newington box kick bounced around the fullback in the 65th minute and allowed the visitors to extend their lead to eight points.

Joeys responded quickly with a converted try to flanker Charlie Ghattas and attacked again from the kick off, but Newington held on for an important one-point win on the road.

At Bellevue Hill, Shore fought back from 17-7 down to lead Scots 28-27 in the closing stages of their round two match.

Scots attacked Shore’s line for the lion’s share of the final 10 minutes but couldn’t find a way through the visitor’s resolute defence.

In the 73rd minute, after pushing Scots out of their red-zone, Shore’s discipline slipped and Scots were awarded a penalty for not rolling away.

Year 11 flyhalf Oscar Tremlett then calmly slotted the match-winner from 40 metres out to hand his school their first win of the season.

At Kings, Riverview scored four unanswered first half tries to claim a 26-7 lead at North Parramatta.

Kings hit back with tries on either side of the half time break, but five pointers to centre Taj Scarr and winger Brody Folks sealed the win for the visitors before a late try to lock Will Spora added a cherry on top.

After two rounds, defending premiers Shore are winless while Newington remain undefeated. Iggies, Joeys, Kings and Scots are all 1-1.

In round three, Joeys host Kings, Scots travel to play Riverview and Newington take on Shore.
