Focus on attack for Melrose & Manly as they prepare to tackle Northern Suburbs

By Nick Kelland

Premierships aren’t won in the first month of the competition but Manly coach Billy Melrose knows how important it is to start the competition well. Particularly in one as tight as the Shute Shield.

The Marlins have started 2019 with two wins and a bonus point loss and while Melrose is pleased with his side’s start, he knows his side has a long way to go.

“We are making steady improvements as a team. Each outing we have got a little better. Against Easts, we scrapped really well under duress to hold on and win.”

“We’re a good way off what I think is possible for this team though…”

Melrose will get the chance for his side to continue that upward trend this weekend, when they tackle an ever-professional Northern Suburbs unit – who are undefeated thus far – and turned out one of the performances of the competition when they comfortably accounted for Eastwood 44-14 last start.

“Norths will be a great measuring stick for us. They have started the season in hot form, there’s no doubt about that.”

“They are so solid in their structures on both sides of the ball that you have to bring your best, or there is no point showing up.”

Melrose speaks highly of his team’s offensive potential – but admits that they are yet to click in that regard as well as he feels they can. It only gets tougher against Norths, with their leading try-scorer Michael Adams ruled out for the fixture.

“It’s no secret we like to use the ball and play a slightly unique blend of options in attack.”

“We probably have not been as threatening as we’d like but again we have blooded many new players into a new system and they are doing really well. We have good upside, but it’s time to get it happening.”

The more astute of rugby observers will be well aware that it’s difficult to play an expansive brand of rugby without a solid scrum and lineout, and good front-foot ball.

“Our set-piece has come under pressure in some areas – but the boys are working really hard to get it right for this weekend.

Melrose heaped praise on a number of the new players in the system when discussing where the match-up with Norths would play out.

“I’ve loved seeing guys like Jimmy Ohmsen get a chance out of position and do really well.”

“I’ve also liked other young players like Will Macrae (prop), Hoots Coffin (centre), and colt Max Douglas.”

As for Saturday?

“We will try and combat them in our own way and see if we can’t apply a little pressure ourselves. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Northern Suburbs host Manly at North Sydney Oval on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is at 3:00pm AEDT.
