Finegan backs former teammate as new Brumbies CEO
Former Wallabies and Brumbies forward Owen Finegan believes his former teammate Joe Roff is the man to fill the vacant Brumbies CEO role.
The ongoing saga in Canberra ended over the weekend, with outgoing CEO Michael Jones agreeing to a settlement, ending a dark period in the nation’s capital.
“Joe’s playing record gives him a firsthand understanding of what is required on the field by the players and what his good mate Stephen (Larkham) and his coaching, training and medical team needs in term of a high performance environment,” Finegan wrote on rugby.com.au.
On top of a prolific playing career with both the Brumbies and Wallabies, Roff has a Bachelor of Applied Finance and spent a year studying at Oxford in the later stages of his career. He is currently CEO of the Student Body Union at the University of Canberra.
“Joe’s education, business acumen and time on the Brumbies board allows him to understand the strategic goals and direction of Brumbies Rugby, the divided Canberra rugby community, the difficult domestic sporting environment in which they operate, what the organisation actually requires and expect from their new CEO,” Finegan added.
Despite losing four of their last six matches, Finegan is confident the Brumbies can overcome the off field turmoil and their mid season form slump and claim the Australian conference.
“In what has been a tough season this talented group of rugby players will continue to do their bit and a season defining challenge looms over the next two weekends against the Bulls at home this weekend and in a fortnight when the Brumbies take on current Australian conference leaders the Rebels in Melbourne,” Finegan wrote.
