Final round to determine Super Rugby finals
After a number of surprising results over the weekend, the Super Rugby finalists have been decided heading into this weekend’s final round.
The Waratahs and Brumbies will battle the Hurricanes, Stormers, Chiefs and Highlanders for the 2015 crown, with this weekend’s results set to determine each side’s road to the final.
To simplify things, we’ll take you through the matches that matter this weekend.
Friday 5:30pm: Blues (14th) v Highlanders (5th)
After a disappointing performance over the Hurricanes last week, the Highlanders will be eager to return to form and secure 4th position and a home semi final with a bonus point win over the Blues.
Even the most one-eyed Australian supporter will struggle to predict an upset in Auckland.
Friday 7:30pm: Rebels (10th) v Force (15th)
Whilst neither side will play finals football this year, Friday nights derby will give a number of Australian’s a final opportunity to impress Wallabies coach Michael Cheika before he announces his squad for the Rugby Championship.
More importantly, there’ll be one hell of a drink on after.
Saturday 3:30pm: Brumbies (6th) v Crusaders (8th)
The Brumbies sit level with the Waratahs on 47 points, but must claim a bonus point win over the Crusaders and hope the Waratahs don’t, if they are to claim the Australian conference and earn a week off. Regardless a win and a Hurricanes or Highlanders loss will see the Brumbies avoid a trip to South Africa to play the Stormers in week one.
The Crusaders will miss the finals for the first time since 2001 but will be eager to send off legends Richie McCaw and Dan Carter on a high.
Saturday 5:30pm: Chiefs (4th) v Hurricanes (1st)
After locking up the Super Rugby minor premiership with a bonus point win over the Highlanders last week, Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd has the option of resting a number of his stars this weekend. However a two week break may not be the best preparation for a major semi final.
The Chiefs can claim a home semi final in week one with a win and a Highlanders loss, but more importantly, avoid a trip to South Africa if they can upset the competition favourites.
Saturday 7:30pm: Waratahs (2nd) v Reds (12th)
It’s the kind of match that makes Waratahs fans very, very nervous.
A bonus point win will secure 2nd place and a week off for the reigning premiers. Anything less, could see the Tahs fall to 6th place and head to South Africa to play the Stormers in week one.
The Reds have been less than impressive this year but with Will Genia, James Horwill and potentially Quade Cooper playing their final match for Queensland, an upset could be on the cards.
