Execution key for BBC against Churchie as season defining month begins

BBC begin a season defining month of rugby this Saturday with a blockbuster clash against Churchie on Old Boys Day at Miskin Oval.

“It’s a huge match this weekend,” Director of Rugby Todd Dammers told Rugby News.

“Churchie at home on Old Boys Day, I think it’ll be one of the games of the year for our young men and I know they are really looking forward to it.”

BBC overcame a slow start to beat Brisbane Grammar in the opening round a fortnight ago, then came from behind to beat Downlands last weekend in a match played on BBC’s bye weekend.

“We were pretty clunky in comparison to what we had been in the trials and Grammar started the match really well.

“But to our boys’ credit, they worked it out and were able to balance the ship and finish the match strongly.

“It’s easy to lose games like that when you’ve been poor in the opening 25-30 minutes but it was positive to see a much better second half performance.”

After two scrappy wins in two weeks, Dammers said execution was the key to rediscovering BBC’s impressive preseason form.

“Not a whole lot needs to change in they way the boys are playing,” he said

“They’ve put themselves in a lot of good spots in the past two games but the execution has been missing right at the end, which isn’t uncommon with 17-year old kids.”

Execution wasn’t an issue when BBC put a big score on Churchie in the final trial of the preseason earlier this month.

“We had a good day but you can never read too much into trials. Churchie had a tough first up game and won by a point against State High, then they put 50 on Grammar last week.

“But I think holding Grammar to nil is probably the more impressive part of that scoreline.

“They’ll come into Saturday’s match with plenty of confidence. Plus they are very well coached and are always very well prepared, so there’s no doubt they’ll be up for it.

“There’s naturally a rivalry between BBC and Churchie but to add to that, Churchie are also one of the defending champions and that’s who we want to measure ourselves against.”

BBC will get plenty of opportunity to measure themselves in the coming weeks, when they face all three joint defending premiers and pre-season favourites Toowoomba in a ridiculously tough month of rugby.

“I said to someone the other day, if the boys can get through the next month unscathed then they will well and truly deserve to be right up at the pointy end of the ladder.

“It’s not often you’ve got to play Nudgee and TSS in back to back away road trips, then we’ve got Churchie and Toowoomba who are also going really well.

“It’s a massive month, not just physically but mentally as well and the boys are really looking forward to it.

“As someone who won’t be on the field, I can’t wait to watch it.”

In the rounds other matches this weekend, Nudgee host Gregory Terrace, Brisbane Grammar travel to play Toowoomba and State High plays TSS.
