CHS, CCC, NSW Country, Sydney & AICES: Standout Performers
After highlighting the performances of some of the best in this week’s GPS v CAS schoolboy clashes, today Rugby News took a good look at some of the other schoolboy associations.
With spots up for grabs in the NSW U18s squads to play QLD U18s and in the NSW Schools sides to play in the Australian Schools Championships, players from right around the state impressed in Friday’s trials at Granville.
Terence Fusi – CHS II/Homebush Boys HS
Homebush Boys hooker Terence Fusi, who has also impressed for the Two Blues’ colts (U20s) this season, was outstanding over the ball, claiming a number of pilfers against CAS II.
Jack Cesare – Sydney/Southern Districts
The big prop destroyed his opponents at scrum time and caused just as much damage around the park with ball in hand. He needed three of four defenders to stop him at times. His teammate Quade Leo was also very good at set piece time.
Daniel Meafou – CCC/Edmond Rice College, Wollongong
Meafou, a talented No.7 from Wollongong, was everywhere in his side’s narrow loss to Sydney. Meafou slowed down Sydney’s ball at the breakdown and broke tackles and got over the advantage line with every opportunity he got.
Jacob John – CHS I/Chifley College, Bidwell
CHS No.7 Jacob John was outstanding against a very good CAS side. John broke tackles every time he touched the ball and plays with a huge amount of energy. He also hits like a freight train in defence.
Tyler Jarvis – CHS II/Hunter Sports HS
Big stocky lock Tyler Jarvis, from Hunter Sports HS, carried the ball over the advantage line every time he touched the ball and worked hard around the field. He’s got a big motor for a big boy.
Johnathon Irima – CCC/Trinity Catholic College, Auburn
CCC winger Johnathon Irima scored a brilliant counter attack try when he spotted space in a broken defensive line and used speed and footwork to score almost untouched in the first half.
Nathaniel Gallagher – CHS I/Westfield Sports HS
Westfield Sports No.8 Nathaniel Gallagher is a tall, lanky No.8 who played with plenty of aggression and was strong technically at lineout time. He’ll continue to fill out and be a dangerous backrower in the years to come.
Kian Edmed – Sydney/Randwick
The younger brother of Tahs flyhalf Tane Edmed has a big boot and is equally as skilful around the park. Edmed controlled the tempo of the game well and got Sydney on the front foot throughout the match.
Bryn O’Grady-Cousins – NSW Country/Central Coast
His jersey may have been six sizes too big for him, but NSW Country prop Bryn O’Grady-Cousins didn’t let that stop him at scrum time, when he dominated his rival despite giving away a decent size advantage.
Pat Hall – AICES/International Grammar School
AICES fullback Pat Hall had a blinder against NSW Country. He kicked ahead and regathered to score his side’s opening try and made metres every time he touched the ball. He also defended well at fullback, saving several tries.
Maxwell Masters – CHS I/Northern Beaches SC, Balgowlah
NSW 7s back Maxwell Masters was under pressure for most of Friday’s clash against CAS but did well to remain composed and kick his side out of pressure. He also set up two good tries, one from a clever grubber and another from a lovely long ball to a teammate in space.
