Brisbane State High and star No.8 send warning to GPS competition on opening weekend

Brisbane State High and the school’s star No.8 Roman Siulepa have sent a warning to the rest of the GPS competition with a dominant 47-28 victory over a disappointing Toowoomba Grammar outfit on the opening weekend of the 2024 first XV season.

On the back of their best pre-season in recent memory, the Kefu brothers’ coached side raced away to a 20-7 lead in the first half after NBL bound Siulepa set up a try, then ran 90 metres untouched to score an eye opening five pointer.

State High fullback Angus Tagicakibau scored a brilliant counter attack try minutes into the second half to extend the home side’s lead, before Siulepa set up another five pointer minutes later to all but seal the result with close to 30 minutes still left on the clock.

Toowoomba, who went into the clash on the back of an undefeated tour of New Zealand earlier this year, scored three second half tries to add some respectability to the scoreline.

But the country boys were no match for their city counterparts on a windy Saturday afternoon in Brisbane.

In the rounds other matches, Nudgee scored three second half tries to claim a 31-12 victory over Ipswich Grammar.

On the Gold Coast, TSS captain Blaze Moana scored a double as his side ran in six tries in a 34-5 win over Gregory Terrace.

While Churchie were forced to work for their competition points in a 37-20 victory over Brisbane Grammar in a match that was far closer than the scoreline suggests.

Churchie led 22-15 midway through the second half, before gaining ascendency in the closing stages.
