Bond out to make it three-in-a-row against gritty Sunnybank outfit

Rugby league convert Jordan Kahu will make his first Hospital Cup start this weekend this weekend when Bond University take on Sunnybank.
The former Bronco and Kiwi international has been named on the wing after an impressive half-hour stint for the Bullsharks last weekend, with the side aiming to continue their undefeated start to the season after proving too strong for Norths and UQ in the opening rounds.
Kahu makes up one spot in an all-star backline, with captain Dan Boardman, fullback Joey Fittock and livewire scrumhalf Liam Dillon all capable of breaking the game open at the Bank.
The side will lack the punch of Reds Alex Mafi, Zane Nonggorr and Angus Blyth in the forward pack, all of whom starred last round, meaning the likes of Connor Pritchard, Salesi Manu and Devon Henson will need to step up to lay the platform for their sparky backs.
Skipper Dan Boardman said his side is wary of the Dragons, who are fresh from a bye after knocking off reigning premiers Easts in Round 1.
“We will need to have our wits about us this weekend against the Bank,” Boardman said.
“They are a sharp team that can attack from anywhere so being cautious of quick taps and line out throws, they love a high impact tackle too so being able to read their defence and get the ball to space is going to be crucial.
“The team is confident and showing more confidence as we get used to playing with each other but never getting ‘too big for our boots’ so to speak.
“We’ve seen that all teams pose a threat in this competition so we’re taking every moment together as it comes and will continue to work hard.”
Sunnybank’s round one victory was soured by a potentially serious injury to impressive number-eight Josh Fenner which sees Nesetolio Solia take his place this weekend.
Hayden Sargeant and captain Liam McNamara will reprise their strong playmaking and leadership combination at flyhalf and fullback respectively.
Veteran Albert Anae will run on for his first game of the year at loosehead, partnering brother Daniel and Laurence Tominiko in a powerful front row trio.
Head coach Sione Fukofuka said his side will need to step up against one of the competition leaders.
“We felt like we left points out on the field against Easts and we’ll need to be better against a confident Bond team,” Fukofuka said.
“Our forward pack will need to step up and set the tone for the day. Set piece is imperative for both our attack and putting pressure on Bond defensively.
“We will also need to be accurate with our tackle and breakdown to compete with a very dangerous Bond backline.
“The boys are very excited to play at home. It’s a great atmosphere playing in front of our supporters on the hill and without COVID we are keen to play well in front of a full house at the Bank.”
