BBC and State High; Nudgee & TSS meet in early season defining GPS clashes

It’s not often that a Nudgee vs TSS clash gets knocked off top billing but this year’s GPS first XV competition seems different.

And that’s taking nothing away from Nudgee or TSS.

Brisbane State High, coached by Steve and Toutai Kefu, were the standout team across the opening weekend of the first XV season.

Against a strong Toowoomba Grammar outfit, who went undefeated through a tour of New Zealand earlier this year, BSHS were close to unstoppable at times, led by No.8 Roman Siulepa and impressive fullback Angus Tagicakibau.

BBC were the form team of the preseason but had a bye in round one.

Stacked with young talent, coaches Dan Leo and Brad Thorn have prioritised momentum in the early parts of the season and took their boys up to Toowoomba last weekend to face Downlands in an extra trial match.

We should know a lot more about both sides title prospects by Saturday evening.

At Boondall, Nudgee host TSS on Old Boys Day with boys sides heading in to the clash on the back of strong wins in round one.

Nudgee scored three second half tries to claim a 31-12 victory over Ipswich Grammar, while TSS ran in six tries in a 34-5 win over Gregory Terrace.

Nudgee scored five tries in a 37-7 victory on the Gold Coast in the final round of last season to claim the outright GPS premiership but only a handful of players will return for each school.

In the rounds other matches, Toowoomba Grammar will look to bounce back from their disappointing opening round loss to State High when they host Ipswich Grammar.

Ipswich hung in there against Nudgee last Saturday and were impressive through the trial period. But you get the feeling Toowoomba will be out for blood after being blown off the park against State High.

Churchie will also look to extend their unbeaten start to the season when they travel to play Gregory Terrace.

Churchie are expected to be without star outside back Treyvon Pritchard for the round two match.

Head to gpsqld.tv to watch all four round two fixtures this Saturday and head back to Rugby News early next week for a full review of all the weekends action.
