Alec Evans Medal: A sneak peak at the contenders to win this year’s Hospital Cup MVP
The Alec Evans medal is awarded to the best player in the Hospital Cup each year, as voted by the Queensland Rugby Referee Association (QRRA) throughout the season on a 3-2-1 basis.
This year, it’s a hotly contested field and with a few games remaining in the regular season Rugby News got a sneak peak at a few of the contenders for the competition’s top individual award.
Kohan Herbert – Souths
Souths flanker-turned-centre-turned-flanker has been a consistent force for the Magpies as they have pushed up the ladder and into premiership contention in 2024.
Patrick James – Brothers
In a side full of young talent, Brothers playmaker Patrick James has been immense and seems to keep getting better and more valuable with age.
Moses Dawai – Wests
Wests tryscoring machine Mosese Dawai has scored 13 tries so far this season and is arguably one of the best attacking threats in the competition.
Matt Gicquel – GPS
Another veteran in contention, you know exactly what you’re going to get when Matt Gicquel pulls on a Jeeps jersey.
Eli Pilz – Easts
Pilz, like Gicquel and James, is having a significant impact on the younger players in his squad but that isn’t taking away from his individual performance each week.
Kye Oates – UQ
Kye Oates shared the Alec Evans Medal with Sunnybank’s Liam McNamara back in 2021 and could be in line for his second after leading UQ back into premiership contention.
Will Cartwright – Brothers
Brothers’ versatile halfback-winger impressed so much at Crosby Park this year that he earned two Reds caps against Tonga and Wales last month.
