Adam Freier set for Shute Shield return against Students
Former Wallaby Adam Freier will come out of retirement and play for Randwick this weekend against Sydney Uni.
The 25 cap international has been named to start at hooker in this weekends clash at Coogee Oval.
“He’s come of the bench in lower grades over the last few weeks and got some game time under his belt. He’ll be a little short on match fitness but he’ll make up for that in other areas,” coach Shannon Fraser told Rugby News.
Freier played his last Super Rugby match in 2012, before taking on an off field role with the Rebels and then the ARU.
But at 35, Fraser still thinks Freier can add plenty to his young Randwick side.
“His experience is immeasurable,” the coach said.
“We’ve got a young squad this year and we’ve given them all a chance throughout the season, so to add a guy like Adam to the side, with the experience and leadership he has, it’s huge for us.”
The fourth placed Galloping Greens sit just two points ahead of Sydney Uni on the Intrust Shute Shield ladder and will be eager to string wins together in the coming month before ending the regular season with matches against Southern Districts (3rd), Eastwood (2nd) and Manly (1st).
“It’s a real important game for us against Uni so this gives us that little boost at the best possible time,” Fraser said.
Randwick plays Sydney Uni at Coogee Oval at 3pm this Saturday.
