Shute Shield Colts: Manly edge out Easts under lights; Gordon survive late scare against Souths

Round five of the Shute Shield colts season delivered another weekend of high-scoring clashes, dramatic momentum swings and some games to forget, with Sydney Uni, Randwick, Gordon, Warringah, West Harbour and Manly all securing important victories.

Questions are now starting to be asked of coaches as the ladder begins to settle and players have finally had enough time to adjust from school rugby to the physical and mental demands of club footy.

Manly 24 – 22 Eastern Suburbs

Manly edged out Eastern Suburbs in a physical Friday night thriller, surviving relentless pressure late to secure a crucial two-point victory.

Easts dominated the opening stages and quickly turned territory into points, with winger Tom O’Hara finishing a slick offload from centre Rory O’Connor to open the scoring.

Defence controlled much of the early contest before Manly finally found rhythm in attack. Winger Thomas Dunn struck back for the visitors, stepping inside defenders to level the scores at five points apiece.

Easts regained the lead through flanker Aston Weir, who continued his outstanding try-scoring form by crashing over from a driving maul.

However, Manly again responded immediately through winger Kynan Hart, with both conversion attempts missed as the score remained locked at 10-10.

The visitors produced the key moment just before half time when centre Xavier Stewart chased through a clever attacking kick from a midfield scrum to score, giving Manly a 17-10 lead at the break.

Easts controlled possession and territory early in the second half and eventually broke through after Stewart was sent to the sin bin. Weir crossed for his second following another powerful carry to reduce the deficit to two points.

Despite being under pressure, Manly produced a brilliant counter punch. Inside centre Lockie Lee burst through the middle before offloading to flanker Will Barnard, who scored under the posts to extend the lead to nine.

Easts again responded through sustained forward pressure to close within two points with 20 minutes remaining, but both defensive lines held firm through a tense finish as Manly secured a hard-fought 24-22 victory.

West Harbour 43 – 31 Eastwood

West Harbour produced a second half comeback to deny Eastwood their first win of the season in an entertaining high-scoring clash.

Eastwood came out with intent, stunning the home side with three consecutive tries to race to a 19-point lead. Their forward pack dominated the middle early, creating space for their dangerous outside backs to attack.

West Harbour finally settled into the contest midway through the first half through a moment of brilliance from winger Brandon Hall, who produced a remarkable grubber kick for teammate Brandon Navarro to score under the posts.

Eastwood responded through prop James Kenna, who powered over from close range to restore the visitors’ advantage.

However, West Harbour finished the half strongly with two quick tries to cut the deficit to seven points, trailing 26-19 at the break.

Eastwood’s discipline then proved costly. After already losing a player to the sin bin in the first half, another yellow card early in the second half opened the door for West Harbour.

The Pirates capitalised immediately, scoring consecutive tries to take their first lead of the match.

Eastwood briefly fought back through winger Archie Thomas, who produced a brilliant finish from broken play to level the scores at 31-all.

But a third yellow card ultimately proved decisive. West Harbour exposed the defensive space on the edges, crossing twice late to seal a 43-31 comeback bonus point win.

Gordon 45 – 39 Southern Districts

Gordon survived a remarkable Southern Districts comeback to claim victory in a thrilling shootout at Beauchamp Park.

The home side struck first through star fullback Max Prykiel, who sliced through the line to score after only 2 minutes of play.

Souths quickly responded through winger Taio Varndell before Gordon’s powerful forward pack took control. Tighthead Justin Amituanai crossed from close range before hooker Sebastian Gyngell finished another dominant rolling maul to extend the lead.

Southern Districts stayed in the contest through flanker Tama Williamson, whose strong carry reduced the margin to 21-12.

But Gordon again exploded before half time, piling on further tries to establish a commanding 35-12 advantage at the break. Prykiel added his second with another sharp individual effort.

Souths completely flipped the momentum after half time. Centre Munroe Fusitua scored early before Varndell completed a hat-trick as the visitors stormed back into the contest.

Four unanswered tries saw Southern Districts remarkably level the scores at 35-all in one of the competition’s biggest momentum swings of the season.

Gordon finally steadied through centre James Archer, who bulldozed his way over a defender and dashed through to the tryline producing a crucial solo try to regain the lead.

A late penalty goal then extended the margin enough to withstand another Souths try as Gordon escaped with a 45-39 victory.

Sydney Uni 59 – 36 Hunter

Sydney Uni continued their strong form with a high-scoring win over Hunter in Newcastle.

The Students opened through No.8 Samuel Niulala, who crashed over from close range before Hunter responded through winger Peni Naqau with an acrobatic finish in the corner.

Uni quickly asserted control through superior territory and execution in the red zone, running in three consecutive tries to build a 28-5 advantage.

A dominant rolling maul, a cheeky inside ball from halfback Tom Goldie and another close-range effort from hooker Daniel Osborne highlighted the visitors’ clinical attack.

Hunter showed fight late in the first half, capitalising on an ill-discipline Sydney Uni leading to two yellow cards to reduce the margin. Naqau grabbed his second before the Students responded through forward dominance in the middle to take a 40-19 lead into the break.

The Wildfires started the second half brilliantly when Naqau completed a superb hat-trick with an 85 metre intercept try.

However, every Hunter surge was answered by Uni. Second rower Phoenix Graham crossed through strong support play before wingers Monty Schmude and Joseph Harvey combined to seal the result.

Sydney Uni eventually closed out a 59-36 bonus point victory in another entertaining attacking display.

Warringah 54 – 24 Northern Suburbs

Warringah returned to form in emphatic fashion, overpowering Northern Suburbs at Rat Park.

After an opening period where both teams were essentially playing kick tennis, Warringah decided to hold onto it and allowed second rower Aron Brennan to open the scoring from close range following sustained pressure.

From there, the Rats took complete control, running in five unanswered tries to establish a massive lead before Norths finally responded through prop Tiseni Afu.

Warringah held a dominant 40-7 advantage at half time before flyhalf Harrison Dene extended the margin early in the second half with a clever individual try.

The Rats added another before Norths showed resilience late. Flanker Flynn Hyndman crossed twice as the visitors finished strongly and secured a losing bonus point.

However, Warringah had already done enough, closing out a commanding 54-24 victory.

Randwick 85 – 14 Western Sydney

Randwick continued their ruthless unbeaten start with another dominant performance against Western Sydney.

The tone was set immediately when winger Bailey Roberts-Lintmeijer caught the opening kick-off and raced away to score within seconds.

Randwick’s attack again proved unstoppable, with flyhalf Charlie Bird adding another huge points tally while flanker Charlie Tanner grabbed a hat-trick through strong support play and powerful carries.

The home side surged to a staggering 78-0 lead by half time in one of the most dominant opening halves in colts history.

Western Sydney showed more fight after the break, scoring two converted tries despite Randwick rotating heavily through their bench.

Fullback Ihaka Wright produced one of the highlights for the visitors with a sharp individual effort from a well-worked backline movement.

But Randwick remained far too strong, cruising to an 85-14 bonus point victory to maintain their perfect start to the season.
