Shute Shield Colts: Two Blues knock off Eastwood, Randwick raise the bat against Norths
By Angus Hayman
Round four of the Shute Shield colts season delivered another high-scoring weekend with Gordon, Eastern Suburbs, Randwick and Sydney Uni continuing their strong form while Warringah and Parramatta also secured important wins.
Several contests saw big momentum swings, but the competition’s top sides continued to separate themselves as the season began to reveal contenders and pretenders.
Gordon 40 – 33 Hunter
Gordon held off a fast-finishing Hunter outfit to secure a hard-fought win, built on a dominant opening half.
Hunter struck first through fullback Elijah Breen, who used sharp footwork to beat defenders and open the scoring. Gordon responded quickly, with flyhalf Tyler Birnie producing a clever chip from an attacking scrum for James Archer to level the scores.
From there, Gordon took complete control. They piled on four consecutive tries through strong set piece and territorial dominance to surge to a 28-7 lead at the break, then extended that margin early in the second half.
Scrumhalf Taite Howells capped off the run, finishing a slick attacking movement that reflected Gordon’s control of the contest.
Hunter eventually found a response midway through the second half, with halfback Oscar Affleck finishing off a clever move before flyhalf Noah Ioasa charged down a kick to score and reduce the deficit to within reach.
Momentum shifted as Gordon’s discipline faltered, with repeated penalties allowing Hunter to march up field. A pick and go try, followed by a yellow card to Gordon, saw the margin reduced to nine points with just enough time remaining for the visitors.
However, Gordon steadied late and crossed for a final try to push the lead out again, sealing a 40-33 win in an entertaining contest.
Eastern Suburbs 48 – 27 West Harbour
Eastern Suburbs continued their strong attacking form, proving too sharp for West Harbour in a high-scoring clash.
The visitors opened through flanker Aston Weir, who crossed from a well-executed maul. West Harbour responded with a penalty goal, but Easts quickly asserted control through perfectly structured attacking play and direct forward carries.
They extended their lead through winger Tom O’Hara, who scored twice in quick succession to give Easts a 24-10 advantage at half time.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Easts striking early and often. Weir and fellow flanker Jesse Cotterill both crossed as the visitors stretched their lead beyond 30 points.
West Harbour showed resilience late, scoring three tries to narrow the margin, but Easts had already done enough, finishing with a 48-27 bonus point win.
Sydney Uni 24 – 17 Manly
Sydney Uni claimed a tight win over Manly in a fast-paced contest that went down to the final minutes.
The match started at a frantic tempo, with both sides moving the ball end to end before Uni struck first through fullback Dane Mitchell, who finished a sharp counter attack.
Manly responded strongly, taking the lead through flanker Xavier Allen after sustained forward pressure, then extended their advantage with an intercept try to hold a 14-5 lead at half time.
Uni hit back early in the second half, with winger Monty Schmude producing a well-executed chip and chase to close the gap.
Manly edged ahead again through a penalty goal, but repeated infringements allowed Uni back into the contest. A driving maul try brought the scores level with minutes remaining.
With the game in the balance, Uni executed a short side play from a scrum, with winger Joseph Harvey finishing in the corner to secure a 24-17 win in a hard-fought encounter.
Warringah 42 – 24 Southern Districts
Warringah produced a strong all-round performance to defeat Southern Districts, taking control early before holding off a late response.
Souths opened the scoring through prop Vito Afu with a pick and go effort, but Warringah quickly responded through winger Will Hardgrave, who sliced through the defence.
Momentum shifted firmly to the home side, with Coby Toon finishing a clever grubber before second rower Joel Couper powered over to give Warringah a 21-7 lead at the break.
Hardgrave added his second early in the second half to extend the lead, before Afu again responded for Souths with another strong individual effort.
Warringah continued to answer every challenge, with fullback Brodie Hitchman crossing as both sides traded tries.
A late red card to Hitchman gave Souths an advantage, which they used to add a final try, but the damage had already been done as Warringah secured a 42-24 bonus point win.
Western Sydney 48 – 33 Eastwood
Western Sydney outscored Eastwood in an open contest, showcasing their attacking firepower in a high-scoring clash.
Both sides traded early tries through sustained attacking pressure, with Eastwood briefly taking the lead through accurate goal kicking.
Western Sydney regained momentum just before half time, with Jayden Strudwick crossing to give the home side a 19-14 advantage at the break.
The second half opened up, with winger Santiago Uata scoring twice in quick succession to extend the lead.
Eastwood responded through their forwards, with prop James Kenna crossing to reduce the deficit, but Parramatta answered immediately. Fullback Zach Seckold produced a strong individual effort to restore control and push the margin beyond two converted tries.
Eastwood threatened late with back to back tries, but Western Sydney had the final say, sealing a 48-33 bonus point win.
Randwick 102 – 0 Northern Suburbs
Randwick delivered a ruthless performance, overwhelming Northern Suburbs in a one-sided contest.
Despite a strong opening period from Norths, who controlled possession and territory early, they were unable to convert pressure into points.
Randwick opened through second rower Zion Poitaha before a sin bin to Norths proved costly, with the home side scoring multiple tries during the advantage.
The lead ballooned to 52-0 by half time as Randwick dominated every facet of the game.
The second half offered no respite, with Randwick continuing to pile on points in a relentless attacking display.
Flyhalf Charlie Bird led the scoring with a remarkable 40-point haul, while scrumhalf Laurence Kiely added a hat-trick in a comprehensive performance.
Randwick finished with a 102-0 victory, underlining their status as the competition’s form side.
