Aust Schools Championships: Big upsets on day one

The 2016 Australian Schools Championships is set to be one of the most competitive in the tournament’s 42 year history after a number of surprising results on day one. Victoria claimed a historic victory over QLD I earlier this morning, while NSW I scored in the final minute to sneak home against ACT. This afternoon, Combined States also upset QLD II setting up an interesting week of rugby at Riverview. Game one: NSW II 57-24 Western Australia NSW II began their campaign with a dominant 57-24 victory over Western Australia, outscoring the visitors eight tries to four. NSW winger Luke Rixon was outstanding, scoring three tries and setting up another for fullback  Matthew McTaggert in a dominant first half performance to help his side secure a 36-7 half time lead. Western Australia hit back with an intercept try after the break, but the NSW attack was too strong with McTaggert crossing twice more in the second half to also claim a hatrick.
