Shute Shield: Round 16 Wrap Up

Sateki Latu starred in the 100th Northern Beaches derby as Warringah upset Manly at Manly oval. Elsewhere, Randwick snuck home against Hunter, Easts belted Gordon, Norths defeated Souths, Eastwood beat Sydney Uni and West Harbour and Western Sydney couldn’t be split.

Catch up on the action below:

Warringah 22-20 Manly

Warringah prop Sateki Latu scored a hattrick to help his side claim victory and bragging rights in the 100th Northern Beaches derby at Manly Oval.

Manly led 10 nil early following a try from close range to prop and skipper Ivan Fepuleai and a penalty goal to Kemu Valetini.

But Latu quickly put his stamp on the match, scoring from a well worked play down the short side after an attacking lineout in the 28th minute, then again from close range just five minutes later.

Despite playing very little rugby in Manly’s half, the Rats led 12-10 late in the first half. However the Marlins hit back with a try from a driving maul on the stroke of half time and led 17-12 at the break.

Marlins No.10 Kemu Valetini added a penalty goal early in the second half to extend his side’s lead, then clearly under instruction to do so, continued to kick the ball away for most of the second half.

In contrast, Warringah seemed more willing to move down the field with ball in hand and eventually scored again through Latu in the 52nd minute. From turnover ball deep in Manly territory, Latu barged over to claim his hat trick and reduce the deficit to one point.

A penalty goal from a contentious penalty in the 75th minute gave the Rats a 22-20 lead and although Manly dominated possession and territory in the final minutes, they were unable to create any scoring opportunities and may have paid for handing over too much possession in the second half.

The Rats are now fifth after they ended a three match losing streak, while Manly remain in third despite losing their fourth match in the past five rounds.

Randwick 22-21 Hunter

Randwick claimed an important 22-21 victory over Hunter to boost their finals hopes and jump to sixth spot on the Shute Shield ladder.

Hunter took an early lead following a try to centre Tom Watson who capitalised on a Randwick mistake to open the scoring in the 5th minute.

Randwick hit back with a try to halfback Dylan Dowling on the back of a clever kick and turnover deep inside Hunter territory.

The Galloping Greens then took the lead minutes later following a Ben Houston five pointer from close range, then added a penalty goal to lead 15-7.

Hunter forward Andrew Tuala reduced the deficit with a try late in the first half, before backrower Jo Tamani scored a brilliant individual try early in the second half to give the home side a 21-15 lead.

Randwick again hit back through their forwards, with prop Ben Higgins crossing from close range with five minutes remaining to put his side ahead by one point.

Hunter had opportunities to steal back the lead in the final minutes but were unable to find a breakthrough.

Eastern Suburbs 48-20 Gordon

Eastern Suburbs scored four unanswered tries in the final 20 minutes in their best performance of the season to claim an impressive 48-20 victory over Gordon at Woollahra.

The Beasties opened the scoring in just the third minute before Gordon took control of the first half.

The visitors hit back with a try from a driving maul, then scored a brilliant team try that was started by Jack McGregor and moved through five sets of Highlander hands before it was scored by Reece MacDonald.

Harrison Goddard then charged down a Beasties’ clearance kick to give his side a 15-8 lead at the break.

Easts started the second half quickly and crossed twice through Teddy Wilson and Josh Smith to take the lead.

Gordon hit back with a try to Ben Pollack but from that point on, it was all the Beasties.

Forwards Will Harris and Jake Turnbull both crashed over on the back of good front foot ball, before Smith and Wilson both crossed for their second tries of the afternoon to seal an impressive bonus point win.

Easts have now won three on the trot and are level with eighth placed Hunter on 42 competition points. Gordon are now seventh on 43 points.

Northern Suburbs 28-19 Southern Districts

Northern Suburbs were forced work for their victory on a wet and muddy afternoon against Southern Districts.

The Shoremen opened the scoring through Reece Mau’u in the opening minutes and added a penalty goal to lead 8-0.

Souths hit back with a try from close range to Jake Douglas but Norths scored on either side of half time to take a 20-7 lead.

The visitors pounced on a Rebels lineout mistake to score late in the first half, before scoring a classy set piece try through Nathan Russell shortly after the break.

Souths returned serve with a try from close range to hooker Samo Malolo, then reduced the deficit to just one point in the 65th minute after a try to Toka Sopoaga.

But with the match in the balance, Norths flexed their muscles in the final 10 minutes. Extending their lead with a pick and go try to Dave Henaway, before adding a penalty goal to seal a 28-19 victory.

The Shoremen now lead the competition on 60 points, three ahead of Sydney Uni in second.

Eastwood 26-21 Sydney Uni

Eastwood moved back into the Shute Shield top four after claiming just their second win in the past seven rounds, beating Sydney Uni 26-21 on a muddy TG Millner pitch.

In a match dominated by the forwards, it was a piece of individual brilliance from winger Zak Hickey that proved the difference.

Sydney Uni started quickly and led 21-7 midway through the first half following tries from close range to Sam Talakai and Charlie Hancock and a driving maul try scored by Ciaron Loh.

Eastwood hit back through prop Willie Leoso, then levelled the scores on the stroke of half time when Ratu Tuisese crossed on the back of a Sydney Uni mistake at the back.

Forwards scored all six tries in the first half, with four scored by front rowers. The two sides went to the break level at 21-21 after a bruising opening stanza.

Minutes into the second half, Tane Edmed produced a perfectly weighted crossfield kick towards winger Zak Hickey from inside his own half.

Hickey managed to snatch the ball, inches inside the touchline, spin and race away to score what would be the match winning try.

Eastwood then held on to claim a five point victory and move back into fourth spot.

West Harbour 21-21 Western Sydney

West Harbour missed a potentially match winning penalty goal after the full time siren, but still managed to make Western Sydney’s road to the playoffs tougher with a 21-21 draw under lights on Friday evening.

On the back of two straight wins, the Pirates opened the scoring following a barnstorming run by Presley Tufuga.

But the Two Blues took control of the first half after that and opened their account with a driving maul try, scored by JP Sauni.

Western Sydney took the lead when Toti Mafi chased down a perfectly weighted attacking grubber from Reece Suesue, then led 21-7 at the half time break following a second maul try.

West Harbour hit back with a try to Senijiale Dawai in the opening minute of the second half, then levelled the scores in the 66th minute from a driving maul.

Jack Debrezceni, typically an extremely reliable goal kicker, then missed a penalty goal attempt from 30 metres, ending the match in a 21-21 draw.

Western Sydney were lucky to escape with two points but now find themselves four competition points behind Hunter in eighth.
