Vainikolo says farewell to Trojans with treble

JOSH VAINIKOLO gave the Terrigal Trojans the perfect going away present with a three-try performance in the Central Coast grand final on Saturday.

Vainikolo, a strong running No.8, is heading to Portugal along with teammate Adam Denckert to play in the northern hemisphere winter but left the Trojans with some wonderful grand final memories.

The Trojans beat Ourimbah 39-11 ay Woy Woy Oval before a healthy crowd in one of their more complete performances of their 2017 season and the victory enabled them to post back to back premierships.

Ourtiumbah had gone straight to the grand final after defeating the Trojans in the major semi, but as it turned that performance lit the fire for the 2016 and now 2017 premiers.

Up until that major semi final the Trojans had gone through the regular season undefeated and in many’s good judges said it was the wake up call that was needed to ice the title game.

Trojans coach Chester Scott said his side approached the big one with the right mindset.

“Yeah their minds were in the right place for a grand final,” he said.

“We slowly ground them down and then ran away with it at the end.

“This may sound a bit greedy but we were disappointed to let them score at the end.

“Having a 39-6 score and our line intact would have been just that little bit more satisfying.”

Words you would expect from a coach from the south island of New Zealand!

Trojans teammates Vainikolo and Denckert won’t be back in Australia until well into the 2018 season.

“They’ll finish their season there (Portugal) and then travel around a bit I would expect,” Scott added.

Danckert was the official Player of the Grand Final and directed traffic well throughout the 80 minutes and was an excellent link between the forwards and his outside backs.

The Trojans was the leading points scorer on the coast and will revel in Portugal.

Vainikolo had a great day, crossing for his three tries, while fellow forwards Sam Kenny and Alex Brewin were never far from the action.

The depth in the Terrigal squad really did come to the fore and all their finishers made their mark.

The backline was most effective. They were dangerous with the ball and regularly got over the advantage line.

Vainikolo opened the scoring for the Trojans and added two more in the second half as the game started to open up.

Scott said preparations for 2018 are already well under way.

“But we’re going to get over this season first and then start the work for 2018,” he said.
