2025 Hospital Cup Season Review: GPS with Sio Kite
Although GPS had a disappointing finish, missing out on finals and ending the year in seventh, the club was able to blood a number of fresh faces which, in theory, will help them progress in 2026.
The big news at GPS is the departure of head coach Sio Kite, who is stepping down to spend more time with his young family.
Overview with Sio Kite:
“It’s hard to shy away from the fact that we were disappointing and let down our amazing supporter base by not reaching the heights we wanted to,” Kite said.
“We were able to give debuts and opportunities to guys perhaps a bit earlier than we planned – but this should be good for them in the future as it will have them ready for the rigours of playing at that level.”
What is the focus at GPS between now and round one next season?
“I made the decision to step away from the role next season to concentrate on my commitments to my family, especially my son Jeremiah – but I have no doubt the focus will be on moving into the top four,” he said.
Which players do you expect to push on next year?
“It’s a no-brainer, but I expect James Martens to push on – perhaps he may not even be playing much club football next season. He was phenomenal every time we had him this year and a massive difference maker,” Kite said.
“I expect Peter Welsh (lock) to step up as well. He is a tough country boy who takes no steps backwards and made massive strides in his development this year.
“Oskar Enasio (centre) only returned to the code following a stint in league. He was a difference maker and will only benefit from spending more time in rugby union.”
What can we expect from GPS in 2026?
“Bigger and better – the club has put in the right structures off the field to prepare for success. A new voice will no doubt push the club back to where it belongs,” he said.
