2023 GPS Mid Season Review: Toowoomba, Nudgee & TSS
With four rounds remaining in the 2023 GPS season, the premiership remains wide open.
We spoke to the coaches this week to check in and see how they think the first half of the season has gone and what they need to do differently in the weeks ahead.
Scott Gale – Toowoomba Grammar
How would you describe your start to the season and why?
“For the most part, we’re happy with our start to our season. We’ve managed to put together passages of very good rugby on both sides of the ball, but the goal is still to do it on a more consistent basis.
What do you need to improve in the second half of the season and why?
“There are a few things, but consistency is a key improvement area for us.
“The GPS season is very short and you can’t afford to have an off day, especially leading into the back end of the season.
“We will continue to work hard at training so that we can execute consistently over the next four Saturdays.”
Who is the most dangerous team in the competition at this stage and why?
“The competition has been unique this year in that almost anyone can beat anyone on their day.
“There are a number of teams still in the hunt and there are no easy games. We’re focused on what we can control over the next 4 weeks.”
Andrew Scotney – Nudgee
How would you describe your start to the season and why?
“Our start to the season has been punctuated by some good halves of rugby and some inconsistent halves.
“Our ability to execute in the attacking 22 is where we have been inconsistent.”
What do you need to improve in the second half of the season and why?
“Our set piece and attacking ruck in the opposition 22 is our big work on.
“We have been getting opportunities in that area but turning over the ball too easily.”
Who is the most dangerous team in the competition at this stage and why?
“Our next opposition is the most dangerous team in the competition.
“The competition is evenly balanced and we are now in a position of having to win every game. All we are concerning ourselves with is BBC this Saturday.”
Mike Wallace – TSS
How would you describe your start to the season and why?
“We have had a stronger start to the season than many expected of us.
“Our group has tied in well to our game plan and worked very hard, especially defensively, to improve.”
What do you need to improve in the second half of the season and why?
“Our boys need to continue to stay committed to the things that have got them to this point.
“The challenge is we have a number of year 12’s who have significant academic priorities which we fully support them on. It is for the coaching group to modify our training expectations to ensure that academics comes first!
Who is the most dangerous team in the competition at this stage and why?
“Nudgee, TGS, Churchie. They’re all the teams we have left to play.”
