2021 GPS Rugby Season Preview: Toowoomba Grammar
Toowoomba Grammar head in to the 2021 GPS season with an experienced squad featuring a number of players with first XV experience.
They face defending premiers BBC in their opening clash this weekend.
Overview with David Enfantie:
“Everything is looking pretty good at the moment and I know all the boys are really excited to get stuck in to the start of the season,” Enfantie told Rugby News.
“I think everyone is just really grateful that we’re getting to play rugby this year. A lot of people are doing it pretty tough at the moment, particularly down in Sydney so we’re all very fortunate to be in this position.
“We’ve had a few ups and downs through the preseason and a few injuries along the way. We played plenty of different opposition and some days we came off season best but overall we’re happy with how we’re progressing.
“We start on Saturday against BBC at BBC and that’s a pretty big challenge but it’s one we’re all really looking forward to.”
What style of rugby can we expect to see from your side this year?
“We’re a fit side so we’ll look to use the ball quite a bit and move teams around.
“You have to have a good set piece to play any style of rugby but that’s something we’ve spent a fair bit of time on over the past few months.
“We want to play that tough, country rugby style where we never give up and show plenty of pride to represent each other and our school.”
2021 Squad:
“We’ve got quite a few boys returning from last year and that’s a massive bonus. They’ve experienced it and know what to expect.
“We’ve also got some exciting young year 11 boys pushing into the side as well, so it’ll be interesting to see how they go.”
Player/s to watch:
“Our captain Charlie Wigan got selected in the QLD U18s White side to play NSW earlier this year but unfortunately that game got postponed,” the coach said.
“He’s a prop and a really good leader. Someone that all the boys look up to.
“In the backs, Sebastian Sialau has come through the Victorian U18s system and has just been signed by the Melbourne Rebels. He’ll be an exciting one to watch.”
Bold prediction for the season ahead:
“I’d prefer not to predict anything to be honest. We’re just focussing on ourselves at the moment and we’ll look to take it one week at a time.
“We’ll give it everything and see where we end up on the ladder at the end of the season.”
