2021 GPS Rugby Season Preview: St Joseph’s
Joeys first XV coaches Tim Andersen and Greg Thompson believe this year’s GPS competition could be the closest in the past 10 years.
Their squad consists of boys across years 10, 11 and 12 and look to be right on the pace after a strong trial period which culminates with a clash against neighbours Riverview on Saturday.
Overview with Tim Andersen:
“We’re really happy with how we have performed over the last six weeks or so. We’ve built each week in the areas that we have wanted to and are starting to execute at the levels we are aiming for,” first XV coach Tim Andersen told Rugby News.
“Its important to build and develop as a squad through the trial season and give as many boys an
opportunity to impress. You also want to be testing and building plenty of combinations throughout the squad and I think we’ve done that.”
“We had some great games against some great schools. All the games were extremely competitive and its been great for our boys to play different schools, from different associations who play different styles of rugby.
“One thing we’ve worked hard on is making sure our players have the ability to adapt to different styles and the trials give us a great chance to do that.”
What style of rugby can we expect to see from your side this season?
“As with previous seasons, we’ll be aiming to play a fast paced game built on fitness, toughness and a high level of skill
“Our set piece has been a real focus for us in our preseason and it’s starting to pay dividends
“We have worked hard to make sure we are fit and able to challenge teams until the 70th minute.
“But ultimately, we want our boys to enjoy their rugby and play what’s in front of them.”
2021 Squad:
“This year’s squad is one of the hardest working squads we have had in many years,” Andersen said proudly.
“They are extremely close in terms of their bonds and relationships, and they work well with each other both off and on the field.
“It’s a bit of a mixed group with year 10, 11 and 12 boys but they all get along really well with one another.
“Our leaders are also doing a tremendous job with our younger less experienced boys, which has been great to see.
“It’s a squad with a lot of potential.”
Players to watch:
“As with previous years, we have a real squad focus. We work hard in the pre season to ensure that all squad members feel a part of what we are doing and that anyone can step into the team and do their job well.
“We’ve got potential and talent across our entire squad and it’s our hope that they all put their best foot forward through the season.”
Bold prediction for the season ahead.
“From what I’ve seen, I believe that the 2021 GPS season will be one of the closest in the last 10 years.
“It looks as though every team is capable of winning on their day against any school
“It’s just great that we are back playing in front of crowds, families and schools after such a challenging 2020 season.”
