2020 Premier Rugby Preview: 10 burning questions with Sunnybank’s Sione Fukofuka

After the longest preseason of all time, the opening round of the 2020 Premier Rugby season is almost upon us and what a season it is shaping up to be.

Ahead of round one we spoke to all nine Premier Rugby clubs, as we’ll continue to do throughout the season, to get the inside word on their preparations for the season ahead.

From the most annoying player in lockdown, to what it takes to win a Hospital Cup and everything in between, we asked each of the nine Premier Rugby coaches 10 burning questions to help get you ready and excited for opening kick off.

First up, new Sunnybank coach Sione Fukofuka.

What’s been the most challenging aspect of the past few months?

The most challenging aspect has been staying connected, continuing to learn and maintaining momentum through the Covid-19 stand down.

Which player bugged you the most during lockdown?

Our favourite Zoom meeting attendee was definitely Daniel Anae.

What parts of your game are you happy with heading into round one?

Leading into round one I’mm happy with our attitude and our work ethic. Our attack and game understanding has also improved and is tracking well.

Where do you think you need to improve from last season?

The two big focus areas from last season were our set piece and defence.

If you could take one part of another Premier Rugby team’s game and add it to yours, what would it be?

I would take the scrum from GPS and Easts and add it to our game. They have a great platform to launch off which allows them to play at the advantage line.

Which players from your club are you most looking forward to watching this season?

I’m very excited to see Liam McNamara back fit and healthy. Josh Fenner will also add physicality and skill to our squad. I’d like to see Zac Sheppard and Masi Ganita play full seasons after injury interrupted campaigns last year.

Outside of your club, who is the most dominant player in the competition?

I’d say (Brothers flyhalf) Rohan Saifoloi would be one of the most influential players in the competition. He’s a very good organiser and manages the game well.

What is the key to winning a Hospital Cup premiership?

The key is a strong set piece, an experienced roster and a bit of luck with injuries.

Which teams will be the big improvers this season?

I expect Easts to the big movers this season on the back of a very strong squad and in Moses Raulini’s second year as head coach.

Who will you play in this year’s grand final and why?

I would expect Brothers to again be in the GF with their experience from last year, a strong squad and Anthony Matheson taking on the head coach role.
